Hi there,
Its a pretty complicated situation. In a nutshell: I paid for a laptop on paypal and the seller 'accidentally' closed his account and says the funds are on hold and hes marked the item as dispatched.
The payment was made through my credit card > paypal > Sellers paypal. I sent 2 payments to make the total as he said he couldnt withdraw the first amount as it was too big.
He's now telling me that he wont send the laptop because he doesnt have the money in his bank! He said I should open a dispute on paypal however they said because its 2 payments i may only be covered for one!
Im just wondering what you guys know on this kind of thing, will my credit card cover me for this? I rang them too and they said I cant dispute the transaction until the seller claims them both! However paypal have told me its cleared and is on its way to his bank…
Any help is much appreciated, pretty worried as I paid over £1000. Im scared that hes trying to close his paypal account and do a runner. is this possible?

not sure - my paypal account got hacked or something about 5 years ago and paypal were pretty good about it. they rang me up out of the blue and asked me about a transaction which had just gone through my account which seemed suspicious. someone had taken about 200 quid out of it. i told them i didn't know anything about it and they stopped the transaction and refunded me the money
that's my paypal experience - hope you get your problem sorted out

You should get an email going with Paypal and the seller with both of you acknowledging where the situation is at. If he refuses to do that, then yeah, I’d say you got scammed.

There's no limit on paypal withdrawals unless you just opened a business account with them. Sounds like a scam to me.

Yes guys its been confirmed a scam, ebay have notified me, my only defense I have is my credit card company, who will look into it once the payment has been proessed and is on my statement.... :@
Technically I haven't spent anything yet as its just come from my newly opened credit card, I just hope there are no loop holes against me if Barclaycard cant retrieve the funds from his bank... I feel like crying.

Was the price he was asking seem too good to be true?
If I did the conversion right it looks like you were going to drop $1,679.80 US.

Can’t imagine any computer where that would be a can't pass up bargain.

^^^ A quad 2.5ghz core 15" Retina display with a 1 terabyte flash drive and apple care is $3,500 new.
Living in Seattle though, craigslist is awesome for that sort of thing!

Yikes. That’s enough horsepower to have you producing music well into fall 2015, possibly even through the winter months if you really want to push it and play dangerously.
Still curious what was being sold.

your credit card should take care of you... just keep the dialogue open with PayPal and make sure that the credit card company knows the exact amount of the transaction... since they aren't even seeing it yet it's you telling them. that's a good thing and definitely the sweet spot.
you'll be fine. it'll just be a tedious and time consuming pain in the ass. you have to pay something for the lesson you learned... might as well just be a headache and some time spent - THIS TIME.

Thanks for the support, well to update you all. The chargeback has been raised from my CC company. However it is against Paypal. So they will either honour it or dispute it. Im waiting for a letter.
Yes the laptop was a MacBook Pro 15" 2013 model. Just what I needed to get me producing! Ill not express my anger on here with the scammer but one things for certain. He will need to change his mobile number if I don't get my money back.

Well I got my money back! Barclaycard raised a chargeback and paypal didn't dispute it. So hopefuly the scammer has had his bank raided plus additional charges

Eliminate headaches and buy your laptops at Wal-Mart. You can get a decent one for $500 these days, shrink-wrapped.
