latency issue -core audio verses external firewire interface

Here is something I noticed in the audio preferences of Live. The built in audio has 8ms less latency than my firewire 410 when they are both at 505 buffers, 44.1 khz ?

Built in audio
12ms + 12ms + 0ms = 24ms

Firewire 410
15ms + 17ms + 0ms = 32ms

Is this normal ? I thought an external soundcard is supposed to offer better latency performance than the built in core audio ?

It is the same reading with or without the inputs selected in either case which I also don’t quite understand as i would have thought that if the inputs were not selected, only the outputs, they would not add to the total latency ?

well. On a g5 with built-in digital i/o i get about 3ms latency at 512 samples.
the only audio interface i tried so far that goes lower is the delta 1010.
The RME devices also have very low latnecy.
But i'm still saving for one of those

how do you get it so low, i cant get mine lower than around 15ms before it starts breaking up, even then it can be a bit dodgy ?

Why am i getting better performance from the built in audio, I thought it was supposed to be the other way round ?
