Multi timbral VST's

Post by Dirk C » Wed Oct 29, 2014 4:11 pm

I've found in this forum some (older) posts on the use of multi timbral VST's, but most of them were saying that you just as good can use an instance per track.

The obvious question now is: what if you want to use the VST as multi timbral instrument (so, 1 instance, 12 channels or so), how can it be done in Ableton Live?

Anyone with experience?

Multitimbral plugins are a pain in the ass in most DAWs, not just Live.

You need one MIDI track for each channel you plan on using. Only the first track has the plugin, though. Then you need to route the MIDI channels appropriately to the plugin.

If the plugin supports multiple outs and you want to use them then you also need to create extra Audio tracks and route the plugin outputs to each one.

That's why some people just install multiple instances, it's simpler.

I have no idea how much extra CPU it takes to use multiple instances.

This guy hasn't read the Live manual, ignore him

Using multiout plug ins is way more easy using the External intrument device

The External Instrument device is not an instrument itself, but rather a routing utility that allows you to easily integrate external (hardware) synthesizers, ReWire devices and multitimbral plug-ins into your projects. It sends MIDI out and returns audio.

The two MIDI To choosers select the output to which the device will send MIDI data. The top chooser selects either a physical MIDI port (see 14.3.1), a ReWire slave destination (see 14.4) or a multitimbral plug-in. If you select a MIDI port (for use with an external synthesizer), the second chooser’s options will be MIDI channel numbers. If you’ve chosen a ReWire slave such as Reason as your routing target, the choices will be the specific devices available in the slave project:

If another track in your set contains a multitimbral plug-in, you can select this track in the top chooser. In this case, the second chooser allows you to select a specific MIDI channel in the plug-in.

its indeed easy to use them via live
BUT
in case of omnisphere/trilian i tend to use single instances
the reason:
its a pain to navigate between patches in spectrasonics multis
i like the idea of multies & stacks and would miss it, but in combinaten with push
its not handy for me.

usable with the outdated stylusRMx, but since i drumracked 2 of them
there is no much use in multitimbral percussion

if yo want do very complex sounds maybe its good in omnisphere

with Ethno, which is also outdatet, its different
a performance like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-AeTBgI4zec
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hSN4pqJitg4
you only can do with multitimbral configured layers multis

anyway: for trilian, omnisphere and stylus i have multitimbral preset for L9 to download
Spectrasonics-bundle-multisetup-L9x Project
LINK

cheers

You are correct, that way you can avoid the extra audio tracks, you place External Instrument in each MIDI track (except for the first one where you placed the plugin).

I have read the manual BTW  I just don't use any multitimbral plugins. My apologies for being such a loser...

Sorry for the harsh response, probably frustrated form playing and loosing videogames all night.

But well sometimes even readin manuals isn't enough, so apologies.
