What are the correct settings for just recording my live set

I really can't seem to get my head around all the buttons at the top of Ableton 9. Seems since 8 they got way more complicated.
All I want is to record my live set and make sure it overwrites any previous track automation that I did during my live performance, essentially I just want to record the master. But I seem to end up sometimes in a situation where some of the automation is recorded but not others 'like track volumes'.
Can anybody tell me how I should set it so that it just works and I can always remember to capture my inglorious moments of musical failure so I can at least render my live sets and then listen to them after for discerning disapproval?
