A bass guitar straight into your audio interface then get it going through IK Mulitmedia's Ampeg SVX VST plugin. Very nice indeed.
Or as Cowlash said, Trilian, which is good or Subboombass by Rob Papen. Both good VSTi's.

Just as a matter of interest, what can Trilian and Subboombass do that Operator can't? I don't know them, but I'm interested. Is it really worth all that moola?

i don`t know subboombass, but you can`t compare trilian and operator!
trilian is sample based, operator is a fm-synth.
so with trilian you can choose bassguitar models, or sampled synthbass sounds.......

It doesn't have to be either/or. I use both Trillian and Live's bass sounds from the Instrument rack simultaneously. The result sounds better than the sum of its parts.

I bought an older Peavey Dyna Unity bass for this. Couple hundred bucks for a koa bodied, neck through with active electronics and a hard shell case. New set of TI flats and several hours screwing around with some of the Freidman lesson books (and playing the bass parts of various karaoke backing tracks) and I can do OK. I've only run it in to Live via NI's Guitar Rig 5 "clean bass" patch. I'll have to check out the IKM one, though, as SVX is the "classic" bass amp and I'm not sure NI has something like that modeled (haven't checked though). The downside of this "use the real deal" approach, is that not too long after buying the Peavey I saw a steal on an old Kramer Duke bass that was in "found under the bed condition" for $300 or so. Now I have two basses.
I've also read a lot of people prefer something called "Broomstick Bass." I never tracked it down, but apparently it delivers the goods, if you're looking for a VST.
