is there a way to map sample start onto a macro when sampler is within an instrument rack?

not in Sampler, only Simpler.

That is a shame. Sampler should be able to do everything simpler can.

No but YES, there is a workaround.
Engage 'Link'
Set Aux envelope to Sample loop start. Map the level of sustain to knob.

Just came here to ask the same question.
This is really disappointing — I can't see any good reason as to why this should not be possible.

I was able to work something out by Mapping the 'PEAK' parameter in the AUX envelope to Sample Offset. I then Mapped 'Peak' to a Macro at the top level of my Rack called 'Start.
Cool — this is exactly what I needed!
