I want to create a device that will let me assign a device parameter and when I click a button on the device will send a signal to a device. I need to be able to do conditional midi button mappings on my controllers for a live set.

Can anybody tell me the correct topics to read up on with Max4Live?

Sounds like you need to look at gate and switch, you'll have to create a control matrix to route the button presses...
