Proper MIDI Controller setup and help

Hello!
I wanted to make sure my controllers are setup correctly. I have 3 MIDI controllers: Novation, Trigger Finger and an M-audio keyboard controller. They are all connected via USB, the keyboard controller also has a MIDI cable going to a synth, and another from the synth connecting to my soundcard.
When I go to MIDI preferences, I see all my devices under MIDI ports. My soundcard shows up as well. Here are the settings:
Soundcard: Track On
Trigger Finger, Novation, Keyboard all set to track and remote on
Hard synth: none are on
No outputs are on
All these work, map midi (controllers), etc. They show up in the control surface section as well.
My questions are:
1)the trigger finger and novation show up in all 3 sections of the control surface area of preferences (control, input, output), but the keyboard controller does not show up in input and output. I only have the soundcard and synth as other options. Is this how it should be? If so, what should the input be (soundcard?)
2)what is the purpose of the sync options? When to turn them on?
3)Do I need any of the outputs on?
The main reason I ask, my keyboard controller on the digital display randomly changes numbers from time to time. I also get very annoying PITCH bends. I don't have any recorded automation and my MIDI mappings aren't mapped to any pitch bend. So, I have a feeling something screwy is going on.
Thanks for any help!
