Hi,

Looking for some advice.

I have an analog mixer between my soundcard and my monitors
My soundcard only has 2 inputs (mic/line)

I am considering running all external devices (mic, synth, DJ setup, iPad etc) into the analog mixer and then using the group bus on the analog mixer to route these inputs to the soundcard.

Advantages:
The bus feature allows me to mute channels and prevent bussed channels going directly to the output if I choose.
No unplugging and replugging.
Input level control on each input

Disadvantages?
Is this a sensible idea?
Is there anything wrong with this routing from an sonic perspective?
Is there any disadvantages to this method?

Considering your options I would say this is thw best move. You have all the advantages of hands on sound control, eq's solo,mute,etc with the only slight disadvantage (and is really isn't problem) of adding low level noise through the analog signal path, which would only be evident if pushing the gain (you don't get something for nothing). So just watch pre gain levels and mute unused channels you'll notice any noise when you monitor in live.

I agree--you've got a good idea there. In fact, it's not unusual in pro studios to have sub-mixers routed to the main mixer where the actual recording is done. What you're planning is a similar concept.

I would also advise you switch to balanced patch cables (if you're not using them already) and make sure you have a solid ground at all your electrical outlets. While analog gear will always introduce some noise to the overall setup, keeping all your connections balanced and your grounding solid will keep the noise as low as the possible.

Thanks Richie, I have been experiencing some hum/buzz from my Virus Snow and Minitaur when balanced audio cables and the USB is connected.

How do you ensure solid grounding at all electrical outlets?

I did this for years with a Mackie 1202, works fine as long as you watch the levels as mention. You can buy an outlet ground tester at any hardware store, fairly common.
