Record clip automation on audio track with "no input"

Hi,
Someone might be able to correct me here, but if I drop audio loops into clips, and set the audio input to "no input", because the record arm for that track is removed, it's not possible to record automation for the clip.
I like to disable the input, to stop confusion with the monitor options.
Do I have this right and does anyone else think it's a bit of an oversight?
Should we be able to record automation without that icon being there? Should it be there when "no input" is selected?
