MIDI Mapping Roland Vdrums

Hopefully this is a fairly simple question:
Just bought some Roland Vdrums (TD-1K http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/TD1K)
I'm now trying to map it in Ableton to record MIDI but it's not showing up. Are there some basic things I can do/check?
I'm new to this, so I could be overlooking many things. I checked the MIDI options in Preferences and didn't see if there. Maybe there is a chain of what should be launch/connected first? Launch Ableton, then power on the drums and connect them...or vice versa?
