any keys tips you all use to help give the track groove?

Swing set to 7% is a good starting place.

live question in general. i've been turning off every channel and starting with the kick keep adding stuff which has worked alright.

Record parts with no quantize. Quantize parts selectively (or move them to taste). Use percentages such as 50% or 75%. Even very high percentages like 90-95% keeps a slight human feel in your song.


For swing, I mainly just rely on the MPC presets and use just a slight amount (unless I want a swingy beat). Also alot of late 80s hip hop used alot of 1/16T time signatures. Good Drum-loops help as well.


Alot depends on what you are trying to do. A jazz groove would be different from a Rock groove, or House Groove, or Hip Hop groove but most of it is just variations of the above (or just having great timing to start with).
