Launchpad: controlling 64 clips of a single track?

Hello
I'm playing a part with many clips and only one instrument, so I'd like to use the full 64 buttons of my Launchpad to trigger 64 clips of a single track.
I tried using the regular session mode, with 8 tracks and their clips outputting MIDI notes to a single master MIDI track, but I couldn't get the clips to stop each other as if they were a single track.
Then I tried MIDI mapping the buttons to the slots of a single track, using one of the User modes.
It works and I even get some visual feedback, but it's a little different than what I'm used to in Session mode.
In session mode the familiar colors are:
When manually mapping buttons to slots (whether in User mode 1 or 2) the visual feedback is:
Why the difference between the 1st loop and the following ones?
Is there a way to get better visual feedback, ideally the same as the regular session view?
Do newer Launchpads have better support for custom mapped slots?
Would Automap or Max4Live be better suited to the task?

- empty: off
- loaded: amber
- scheduled: flashing green
- playing: green

- empty or loaded: off
- scheduled: greenish yellow
- playing 1st loop (or just switched into the correct User mode): amber
- playing 2nd, 3rd, etc. loops: dim red
