Auto-Filter side chain question

....you can mute the track that the sidechain is receiving data from and the auto-filter will continue to respond to it.
But it won't for me.
I have a very basic synth pad with an auto-filter sidechained to a 4/4 kick. While the kick is audible it effects the filter (according to amplitude) but unlike the chap in the video when I mute the kick drum the sidechain stops...um...sidechaining.
Is this normal? Am I doing something wrong?
