Trade Maschine for Ableton?

Hi all,

I am currently a Maschine MK2 owner, but am trying out Ableton (I've owned it in the past as well). Recently, I've begun to realize and get frustrated with my workflow in Maschine, when compared to Live. Specifically, I think Maschine is best for me as an idea generation tool - outside of a DAW in standalone mode. I get frustrated with its MIDI editor, some of its recording quirks, etc. Live seems like an idea generation tool on steroids based on my use. I really like drum racks, simpler, session view, the MIDI editor. I can get much further down the line with my idea than with Maschine. However, it faces a similar issue in that, I don't think I could complete a production / mix in Live compared to Logic / Pro Tools (the lack of comping is a big issue for my work). Still, from an idea generation perspective, it is pretty nice. The two benefits of Maschine to me are browsing samples / building a kit and step sequencing - and I wonder if Push 2 could satisfy those?

Would appreciate your thoughts.

Thanks!

As far as drum sample browsing and available sounds I think you are going to be hard pressed trying to beat Maschine, but I agree it falls short as a complete DAW while also not integrating easily within a fuller featured DAW.

How's Push 2 for that?

Don’t have Push 2 but if Ableton’s existing browser is the basis then it’s probably nowhere near as deep and easy to use as Maschine’s browser. AFAIK Live doesn’t have an extensive tagging system. I’m also fairly confident Maschine’s drum sample library is superior.

But those things aren’t all that matters.

I honestly believe that if you completely give up Maschine, you will miss certain aspects of it. My advice, keep Maschine and add Live. I really don't understand why it has to be either or. Just use both.

I guess I'm wondering what that would be and what Push 2 + Ableton would cover. I'm having a hard time figuring that out (but I don't have Live + Push 2 right now).

Well I've used all of the above (push 1) but settled on Live and a MPD32 -purely a work flow decision for Me- I mostly use custom drum racks and my own sample collections.,I find it way easier just to assign what I want to the MPD, and getting around the browser with the mouse and going through my samples is faster to Me...but again purely a work flow decision for myself. I do agree though your not going to beat the sample collections in machine, unless you have your own you prefer.

You can still buy Maschine expansions - they have WAVs for use and are organized into folders too (kicks, claps, etc.).
