Hotswap a sample in Simpler - expectations

Lets imagine you have been playing with Simpler and it is set to "Classic" mode, with "warp = off" and a loop with a crossfade set up. Now you want to try a new sample & hit the sample hotswap button, or drag a sample into the Simpler's sample area to put a new sample in.

What do you expect to happen?
the Simpler settings remain the same,
or warp and loop settings to all change?

Image

Do you expect loading a sample to change the warp and loop settings of the device?
Or do you expect the established current device settings (Warp, Loop, filters, etc) to remain in place, and only the sample to change?

I believe there is not a right way to implement it because both ways have trade offs, A won't suit situations where you load samples that are quite different to the previous one. And B is annoying iof you are browing very similar samples.

B is what I would expect myself, but it seems I'm in the minority on that one.

So,
when you are creating a rack filled with layers ... you actually WANT it to discard your settings?

I'm amazed.

My process has been like this
  1. Set the Simpler settings as I want them with Loop and warp in place. Group to rack
  2. Duplicate the Chain containing Simpler and Hotswap a sample into the new Chain 2->Simpler
  3. Simpler trashes my settings - so I re-set the Simpler settings BACK as I want them with Loop and warp in place.
  4. Duplicate Chain 2->Simpler and Hotswap a sample into the new Chain
  5. Simpler trashes my settings - so I re-set the Simpler settings BACK as I want them with Loop and warp in place.
  6. Duplicate Chain 3->Simpler and Hotswap a sample into the new Chain
  7. Simpler trashes my settings - so I re-set the Simpler settings BACK as I want them with Loop and warp in place.
  8. START SMASHING HEAD ON DESK
I am amazed that people LIKE and AGREE with the idea that Simpler now ignores what you want and simply says "HEY YOU MUST BE MAKING HIP HOP SO FUCK YOU HERES WHAT YOU EXPLICITLY DONT WANT BTW BUY A PUSH"

It's shit and I can't use Simpler any more.
Any time I press anything on the new Simpler it simply decides I love Warping and switches it on. There is no way to simply use it as a sampler. only as a loop player. It insists on HIPHOP mode at all times.

I can't understand why anyone would ever want that.

You have to accept people work different, or maybe we are just a very small sample. And I am pretty sure there would be people ranting if it was the other way.

I agree with you - the way it is right now in the new simpler is actually completelly counter-intuitive and it made me stop using simpler as well saddly. It's just too freaggin cumbersome now to start over everytime you want to swap samples - I kinda had a feature request that touched part of your issues : viewtopic.php?f=3&t=218657

I added your clip there it might help raise awareness, your comment & vote would help!

It's worth saying that I raised the issue in my usually grumpy style with Ableton and I think it's probably OK to post the reply here.

Names removed to protect the innocent
Ableton wrote: The logic behind this is that Simpler inherits the Clip settings when loading a sample, thus Warp, Loop and other parameters are loaded either from the Clip or from the .asd file associated to a specific sample. This allows users to edit an audio file, and importing it into Simpler keeping the same exact settings.

We understand that in your case this is not desired, and I will bring this up with the developers.

Best regards,
reading between the lines I take this as : "It's required for Push, specifically the 'convert' function".

I definitely agree that there should be an option to hot swap samples and keep the simpler settings intact.

This has after all been the standard behaviour for years with clips and their envelopes. Want to hear what a new sample sounds like after all your clip envelope editing ? Just drag a new sample in....

My simpler settings are always unique to whatever sample I have loaded and what I'm trying to do with it. So for me, having it keep those settings when trying a different sample I've already spent time warping in Session View is counterintuitive. If I load a new sample, I'd much rather it loaded with warp settings specific to that audio file.

Yes, definitely an A vote here as well. If I'm working with Simpler, I'm working with Simpler, it's kind of baffling that it doesn't hold the settings when hot swapping samples.

The animated gif was awesome.

that's logical for presets but NOT for individual core samples -

Yes.
To me there's a difference between "Loading a CLIP" into Simpler, and "loading a SAMPLE into Simpler"

Sure if it's a clip I've made and I load that clip into Simpler I probably would like the settings to come with it, but thats not the case - these are samples which I have never even opened in Live before. But Live has scanned them and saved an .asd all of its own.

They are not my SAMPLE settings being loaded. They are default CLIP settings imposed into the wrong area. sampling.

The thing is there's no real debate, it needs to be user-defined - if some people prefer the way it is now who are we to tell them otherwise, BUT it needs to be user
defined because it's completely messing up the workflow of enough users
