I'd like to be able to control whether my return effects are pre or post fader via MIDI, but these buttons are not mappable. Is there a way around this? I guess in general, is there a way to MIDI map something in Live that is not available in MIDI map mode?

Generally not, a few things are available through Maxforlive that aren't midi mappable but what your asking isn't I'm afraid....
