First post..............bear w/me......................................
Lookin into using Ableton as the "centerpiece" to my set-up. Selling off my Korg D16XD to parlay into a dual processor G5 Mac.. This Ableton style of manipulation is the way i've always dreamed of recording and editing- with such ease and flexibility. javascript:emoticon(':twisted:')
My question(s) is this: Has anyone used this with the PRO TOOLS mbox set-up, and if so, how well do the two programs interact? I know the mbox comes with a lite version of LIVE, but I plan to upgrade to version 5 when it comes out. Also, are there any hardware mix controllers, say, the Mackie HUI, Tascam US2400 etc. work to control the parameters in live, as well as PRO TOOLS? Any insights would be appreciated. This forum is real, and it's spectacular! Plan to learn alot from all you seasoned pro's over the next long time... Thanks in advance. CHEERS!

My advice is unless you are looking to do post-production work, need to swap tracks with other PT users, or are recording bands or something, Protools is pointless if you're going to use Live. Some folks probably swear by PT, but after using it for a few years, I'm really not digging it much. I think it's over-rated. The Mbox is a suitable interface for most project studio types, but honestly, you're probably better off spending the cash on a firewire interface with more i/o options. Don't take my word for it though, as I'm not a fan of Digidesign these days. Get a second opinion and do some research and see what will work well with your tastes.

Sounds like Live with a good mastering suite is more for me. How does Live work for vocals and live instruments? Is there the same tools like good quality eq and compression (via plug-ins perhaps) as there is in a Pro Tools system? Also, can you use a control surface/interface combo type of device(e.g. 002 style) to navigate thru the params of Live? I am a producer/engineer type more so than the DJ type, and I am used to throwing faders and tweaking knobs, so I would rather get a mixer type controller rather than click around w/ a mouse... Thanks again for the help!

if i were to do it all over again, the mbox would not be my first choice. but I have one so whatever...keeps my PT chops up...

there are better options for a combo controller/interface. one that comes to mind is the Ozonic and another is the Novation X-station

I have a mbox/live combo. I use the interface to record into Live and sequence all of my samples and beats. When I am done hashing everything out I then bounce it all down and master in PT. If you making techno/electro like me having a 16 in/out firewire interface is useless. Minimize to Maximize.
