Any help is really appreciated on this frustating issue

I am am unable to record new notes to an exisitng midi part without wiping clean the automation associated with the all ready recorded notes. I am in overdub mode--new notes are added just fine to the part but as mentioned before--all previous automation is wiped out as far as I record the new part.

Used lots of sequencers in the past -nothing ever happend like this in an overdub mode. My God! What's wrong with my life?!
