it looks like a headphone amp or some rack mountable mixer.

any one know exactly what it is?

Looks like a headphone mixer to me, lets the artist make their own balance of instruments in their cans.

yep, i reckon it's an 8-channel stereo summing mixer with headphone output for the drummer, with pan and gain knobs for each channel...
