well they are so much more expensive than dell's for example, are they worth it?

i have been offered a celeron 360 with 1 gig ram and a port replicator for about £730.

but if i did'nt go sony i could get a far higher spec

vaio for me was fantastic... simply perfect...now i'm on this acer thing which feels like a toyota instead of a BMW

simple answer to simple question, you're mainly paying for styling and name...

ah fook i hopped this would'nt happen, its actually £800 for a sony vaio celeron 360 1.4gig, with 1 gig ram and 60 gig hard disk.

plus the docking station thrown in for free

but i could always go with a dell inspiron and get a pentium m 770 2.13gig for £79 more

any advice peeps, i don't put a heavy work load on ableton when using it, six channel and 2 sends with with about 5 plugins, so the 1.4gig should be enough i recon.

Unless you go Apple then Vaio is second to none( except Mac), absolutely worth the money (if you have) but beware of cheap models, celeron is definitely useless. So unless you buy real Vaio (Centrino) Dell would be better choice.

well now i am confused, so vaio is the best pc, but the celeron version is crap?

Yes, anything celeron is crap. Dont even consider it in your search for a computer.

Agreed, Celeron will be a bad choice.

i've always been impressed with IBM laptops. very nice build. styling isn't as good at vaio but you can't have everything.

I had a VAIO which after about 9 months began overheating very badly, although it was a P4 desktop processor in a laptop, maybe I was unlucky but that one was very badly designed.

Now I have a custom audio laptop from Millennium Music, very happy I am now.

I'm gonna have to go ahead and disagree with you on this one... as far as PC laptops go, Sony and IBM are pretty much the only two names that I trust. I've worked with a lot of other brands (including dell, which seems to just love using cheap plastic cases), and the moral of the story seems to always be that you pretty much get what you pay for. If you buy a cheap laptop, you're going to get a shitty piece of hardware. It'll seem like a steal at first, but just wait until it hits the 1+ year mark (convieniently after the warranties always seem to expire.. ).

Just understand that SONY support SUCKS. Have a vaio, dont think it is anything special, but it has a really nice 13.3 widescreen display. That is the reason that i got the VAIO. Not too happy with it though. All the Ports are in annoying places.For instance one PCMCIA port, it is all the way up front on the left side, i have a echo indigo there, real in the way, same with the USB ports...Miss my Toshiba

I never had a sony laptop, but a lot of other sony stuff. Nothing really worked for a long time or had bugs, repair support was bad.

I love my toshiba, nice design and runs for about 3 years now nonstop. Well it wasn´t cheap, but well worth the money.

I would also have a look at HP compaq AMD one, they are quality too and not to expensive.

There must be a thread from rickhyray, he had a problem with his Vaio´s display, you could ask him what he thinks of their support.

I also have a vaio and it also overheats and shuts down sometimes, i'm far from impressed with it. It also has a lot of sony-specific stuff on it which makes driver upgrades for things like video cards a real pain.

I'd go for a dell or something made with standard parts over vaio, they tend to mod and mess with things, which can be good for novelty but in the long term just causes problems.
