I need a stand-alone iPad app that will allow me to trigger samples based on an external sync. (I do not want to bring my laptop and ableton). I am playing with an external keyboard which sends a 4/4 midi clock. When I hit a trigger on the iPad app, I would want the iPad to wait until beat 1 of the next measure, to play.

I have the Launchpad app, but launch pad only allows for MIDI out, not MIDI in (at least that I know of.)

I do not need to time stretching although it is definitely a plus.

I'm using an iPad Pro, so I have as much power as I can get.

There are a few apps which allow you to sync midi timing with Link.

Once you have Link, you're in business with a multitude of apps including Launchpad.

It is an app.

It receives midi time data and it will sync with that time data.

It also has Ableton Link.

So with Ableton Link, any apps that have that turned on automatically sync up. When you hit 'Play' on any of those apps, the app waits for the first beat and stays in sync. You can have multiple apps running at once that have Ableton Link (the launchpad app also has Link).

So you download midi link sync. Find out how to function it and have it receive the tempo data from your keyboard.

Turn Link on for any apps that you want synchronized with it.

And it all just works. No additional routing. As long as MIDI Link Sync is receiving the data from the keyboard and is in time, everything will run the way you'd expect.

What's the name of the cable that I would need to connect it to an external USB? On one side it would have to be lightning connector, on the other end the "square" side (B) of a USB cable. Cannot find it on Amazon.

Also is LaunchPad app the best way to go? And does launch pad to real-time time stretching?

My main down-side with launchpad is you can only display 48 triggers at a time. I need more than that in the course of a show/set.

What I'm trying to trigger is long 30 to 40 second one-shot samples. I will rarely have more than one sample playing at a time. I would love to able to scroll through hundreds of files / or have a scrollable page of namable buttons to trigger them.

Any advice would be valuable to me!

The launchpad can change tempo (which would be expected since it uses Link)

You should just play with the app and the sounds it comes with (clip import is an in app purchase. So if you want to see what it Can do, just experiment with the free stock stuff). The best way to gain the 'info' you're after is to tinker.

For lightning to USB you want the 'camera connection kit'. Recently they've updated it so you're able to continue charging your phone while having it connect to USB devices.

Not all USB devices are low powered in a way where the iPad will feel comfortable accepting it without showing a warning and deactivating the device. To get around that, you can connect a USB hub that has a power adapter. The bonus is that you can connect several midi controllers and even an audio interface if you like.

There is an app similar to launchpad called Remixlive. Aside from those options, there might be some samplers out there or MPC type options but I think launchpad and remixlive sound approximately closest to what you describe.

If you're desperate for multiple layouts here is a possible workaround:
Open two different apps. Maybe one remixlive and one launchpad.

Then just load one. Use it for a while with the other app in the background. Then switch to the other app. While the second one is playing go to the first one and load a different 'set' for a new layout of sounds.
