I would like to turn on filevault (Sierra). Will it mess up Ableton Live, Logic 9 ?

FileVault has a pretty minimal impact...

While that is true and one should make sure to make daily backups, I still would prefer to put any sensitive material on encrypted sparse images instead.

i think FileVault is a no-brainer these days. unless you have a very compartmentalised life, it isn't that straightforward to keep everything that you would rather keep confidential in disk images (although i do use those for some things). email is a good example.

Yeah, but losing data is more scary to me than most people getting access to my data. I'll avoid the latter if I can of course. I suppose, even as I backup every 8 hours normally, bad experiences still are with me.
