Programming in percussion loops. What's your way?

Hi all,
Looking for a bit of advice/guidance here.
Question: when starting out in a new genre, what's your way in learning to programme in percussion loops?
My current approach is to use a reference track in the genre I'm trying to produce and literally programme in the midi for the kicks hats claps etc.from the reference track.
This method works but can be quite tricky as it may be difficult to identify where the midi notes lie on the grid they have used. You can only rely on your hearing and eyes.
How would others approach this?
Would be interesting to know.
