Is it somehow possible to use ableton link over distance?

Is it somehow possible to use ableton link over distance, for instance between countries?

(I find I spend a lot of time fiddling with ideas before sending to collaborators, and the whole process takes soo much longer. I would like to be able to jam or produce together. Not in real realtime, but almost. So that if I have an idea I can record it, put it down and the collaborator(s) can hear it a minute later without having to open new sessions etc.

I use splice and I'm really happy with it but miss a bit more hands-on immediate collaboration-process.....)

Well, even if you could integrate on the same virtual LAN over the internet, which is possible, you still would like to stream your respective outputs to each other. You could probably do something with the Dante Via and DVS combo or similar at the price of some heavy latency.
Some internet gamers are happy about 40ms latency, 100ms is not unusual. Sometimes you can have lower.

Please share your results if you do something like this.

I also found this dedicated product: Steinberg VST Connect Pro. Unfortunately I don't know anyone using it, but seems interesting.

Seems more like another DAW for collaboration..? But I haven't put much effort into understanding it, other than googling for 10 minutes. I even had trouble locating a steinberg support-center where I didn't have to log into an account. Bad sales support.

Because the product seems pretty good, but I don't want to switch DAWs.

Cons: Cubase users only. (Musicradar)

Bummer! I guess there were some wishful thinking there by me

Just so you're aware, all Link does is sync metronomes. It doesn't share audio or files or clips amongst users.

I don't think it'd have much of a positive and robust application over long distances unless you have really long audio cables.

As I've suggested elsewhere it's possible to tie two computers together with MIDI (or Link) and audio over a virtual network. There's no telling what the latency will be, however. It's more useful over a local network I'm sure.

So you're probably right. Nevertheless it'd be interesting to try.

How does another DAW, like OhmStudio, make Ableton Live use Link over "a distance"? I already suggested another DAW-like product by mistake. Just saying…

Think the Ableton developers will ever bring back the almost released Ableton Share feature?

Link uses zerconf, which by definition can only work on local area networks. Initial research looks like you could make a VPN to solve this:

Probably possible with midi as people are now doing video games online.

Not sure of what apps do this though.

I'm guessing this will probably be big this decade as internet bandwidth increases.
