Automation parameters not showing in mixer area (+ signs!)

Hi
I cant seem to figure out why sometimes automation lanes with + sign next to the drop down menu within the mixer area of a clip in arrangement view are appearing and sometimes not.
It s so much easier to just select an effect and start modifying the parameters on an automation lane, and somehow I can't seem to do that as the option is not visible on some clips, whilst on others, it is. It gives me less choices/doesn't list all the plugins I have on that particular track. It doesn't have anything to do with 'showing automated parameters only' as I ve clearly unchecked that box.... Any help? Cheers
