Losing Midi Controller Connection On Recording in Ableton

I've got a tantalizing Ableton puzzler for you.
So I'm using Live Lite 8.1 and via a VST in a Midi channel I was playing some strings. All was going well
until I decided to try to record..I click on the appropriate buttons and now when I play the first note it
sounds continuously before the connection to my Oxygen 25 Midi Keyboard controller drops.
Now I'm thinking if if was a loose/faulty connection why is the issue not happening when just playing the VST without recording?
This is making me wonder, if, and its possible
that I'm missing something obviosu within Ableton?
Any thoughts and solutions most welcome.
