hello!
i am really ashamed to ask such a simple question but i am relatively new to live (4) and cannot find the solution for my problem...
when i load a vsti into live and instead of playing it with the midi keyboard want to paint the midi notes with the mouse in the piano roll i hear the sound of the instrument- but only if i start the track from the beginning- if i start in the middle there is no sound anymore. also if i render the track the sound of the vst instrument is not there. if i play the vsti with my keyboard and record ist everything seems fine! but as said before if i paint the notes with the mouse the sound is only availible if i restart the track from beginning.. can please anybody give me a advice what to do, that would be extremely fine!

No need to be ashamed at all

Im not quite sure what your problem is here but I will take a guess and see if it helps.

Im presuming your recording in the session view. This is the screen that has all the little boxes where you record your clips of midi or audio. Painting thye notes in is fine. It makes no difference if you do that or use a keyboard so no problem there.


Try this

Record some midi notes from your VST in to a clip. Even just a 1 bar clip will be fine. On the clip you will see a little arrow. if you press that the audio should constantly play until you hit stop. Make sure thats happening before you go to step 2.


Now at the top of the screen you will see a button with a round circle. Press that and this will put Live in to arrangement record stand by mode. make sure the loop button is switched off. This is the button that looks like a a square thats next to the locator positions. Now press the clip you just recorded and Ableton Live will then record your clip in to the arrangement page. Let it record for about 20 seconds and press stop.

Now hit the tab Key to take you in to the Arrangement view and you should see the clip you just recorded.

Select the clip with your mouse and without doing anything else go to the menu and press render. A box will appear and then press OK. Choose a location to save your file and press save. Your midi should now be converted to audio.

Apologies if you know all this, but I thought it best to try and explain the steps to achieve this.

The important part here is selecting the clip in the arrange page. This is what tells live how long to render audio. You can also drag your mouse along an empty track to set the range. When you do this you should see a yellow line and again this indicates the length of ftime Ableton will render.

There could be many reasons why your not hearing anything, if you get no joy keep posting, and feel no shame in asking questions.
