How can I get a midi clip playing on track 2 to send a message to turn off track 1 , only while 2 is playing.

The idea is to have the drums on track 1 "duck" , or cut out while a fill on track 2 is playing.

Ive tried using gates, but I just cant get it to respond quick and clean.
I also tried using the cross fader, which im pretty good at, but again its just not as quick and clean as im trying for.

I thought cutting the track off , on beat , could accomplish what I want.

Which gates and how did you sidechain it? Typically this is done by audio. I have a great gate from Unfiltered Audio called "G8 Dynamic Gate" that reacts to MIDI as well(if I remember correctly). I'm not using this much but it's a godsend sometimes.

Automation will of course work. In the mixer level or on the gain of Utility, if Live 10, or on something like FreeG, if Live 9.
