Softstep 2 mapping to scene launch --- strange behavior

Hi everyone... just got my Softstep 2 working for Ableton 10. Had some difficulty in getting the buttons to map with any message other than "pitchbend" but I think that was resolved by deselecting "sync" in the "SSCOM (Port 1)" in MIDI Preferences...
What I'm scratching my head about now is some strange functionality when I map one of the Softstep buttons to the general scene launch button (i.e. the triangle/playbutton that only appears below the scene list when you are in Midi Mapping Mode)
The info box says this will launch the currently selected scene. However, it seems there's more to the story than that...
When I click the foot button mapped to the scene launch button, I have to click it twice. The first click moves the scene selection highlight down one scene, and the second click launches it. Two more clicks will, respectively, select and then launch the scene following that.
But it would be much simpler if I could *just* have this button launch the scene currently selected WITH JUST ONE CLICK (as the info box would imply) and leave the scene selection to the other two buttons that I have mapped to the up arrow for "scene up" and the down arrow for "scene down" (both of which are also shown only in MIDI mapping mode under the scene list)
As it is, if I want to trigger any scene out of sequence, here's what I have to do: press the "scene launch" button the FIRST time --- which moves the scene selection highlight down one scene --- then use up or down to scroll the highlight to the scene I am really shooting for, and *then* hit the scene launch button the second time to trigger that one.
Is there some setting or preference that is resulting in this behavior, or is just the way I'm going to have to do it if I want to jump around and trigger scenes out of order?
I hope this is at least somewhat clear, and thanks in advance for any help in making sense of this!
