Yamaha Montage (or really any MIDI Keyboard) with Ableton 10

Hi guys.
I am hoping someone can help me with this issue.
I have a Yamaha Montage 8 keyboard and I am exploring different ways to use it with Ableton.
I am looking to be able to do something that a tutorial video shows you can do with the Montage and Cubase (I believe there has to be a way to do this in Ableton as well).
Basically the person creates a MIDI track in Cubase and assigns the MIDI out to "any" and then proceeds to assign different instruments on the keyboard to each of the 16 MIDI channels and then records a basic loop while pressing the buttons on the keyboard to change the instrument. All the MIDI data gets recorded and plays back on its proper channel on the Montage.
On Ableton, I do not see any option for "any" for the MIDI out, I only see 1 - 16.
Does anyone know if Ableton has this capability??
Thanks,
Kevin

There is a setting of "All Ins" in the Input pulldown. This is what I always used when recording from my Motif XF (predecessor to Montag)

Awesome thanks for your reply, it sounds like there is a way!
So in the MIDI track I have it set to all ins and all channels and then midi to I have it set to Montage 1 and then underneath that I can choose ch1 through ch16.
In order to accomplish what I am after which is setting up 1 midi track to record several different voices from my montage that are on different tracks, wouldn't I need the midi to section to have an option of "all" or "any" channels?
Thanks,
Kevin

Each part is on it's own MIDI track. Using all 16 parts, you will have 16 MIDI tracks.
To Live, the Montage appears as 16 independent instruments each on it's own channel. On top of multiple MIDI tracks, you will also need audio tracks to record the Montage audio output.
This is how all DAWs work, it's not unique to Live. What's different in Cubase is that when selecting Montage from the MIDI instrument pulldown, it creates all 16 tracks for you automatically. Live does not have such a feature.

I've been thinking about getting a montage, I had a motif 6 a long time ago
so doghouse, it's fairly easy setting up the midi and audio tracks and also being able to drop let's say Reaktor or Omnisphere on a separate midi track and control that also without too much hassle? I seen a video where some audio from the midi track that was routed from the montage had latency issues and seemed like a huge hassle, but didn't look further into it. Also if my interface doesn't have 16 inputs would I have to record all the audio track by track? or is there a way by setting the banks properly?

Montage has a 32 channel (16 stereo outs) USB audio interface built in. You can route any of the 16 parts or the stereo A/D input to these outs. They are restricted to 44.1K/24 bit though. The A/D accepts line or mic levels and can be run as stereo or dual mono, but uses 1/4" jacks with no phantom power available. If it's like my old Motif XF, the mic pres are nothing special but they work.
As far as latency, all hardware will have some latency. There's plenty of ways to deal with it which is a subject in itself. It is discussed in the Live manual.

Thanks!
I have a new found interest in the montage now
The sampler is mostly the selling point for me assuming it’s like the old motief’s which I would think it’s much better, but also everything else, just didn’t want to feel like jumping through hoops to get everything to work. My latency compensation across all devices is dialed in right now and if it’s as simple as setting some compensation somewhere that’d be nice, thx for shedding a enough light for me look into this

You should consider checking out the MODX as well that was recently released. IMO a much better value than Montage.

You can load samples into Montage/MODX but you cannot create or edit them on board. Technically it is a sample player, not a sampler like the Motifs were.

Really, wow I’m no longer interested, i’ve been looking for a soft sampler that has the warmth the motif sampler use to and can’t find one, Omnisphere is really close but editing capabilities are practically not existent , and Ableton sampler needs loads of treatment/plugs to start sounding good, I tried halion6 but it’s just slightly a step above Ableton sampler in raw playback, so I just use sampler or simpler with heavy treatment
The montage loading samples would bypass the entire saturation sampling process that makes the sample sound good, thanks for the heads up
Sup kallen, the MODX looks cool but doghouse said it can’t sample, def a deal breaker, thx though

Yamaha's marketing apparently found that the majority of Motif owners were using their computers for sampling and sequencing so they removed those features from Montage and MODX.

Did a short series for Yamaha on how to work with Ableton Live and Montage. Hope this helps someone:
