I was wondering what everyone uses for headphones in their personal studios. Are there headphones out on the market that you would prefer to use vs. some nice monitors?

I use Sennheiser HD 280 headphones. They are comfy and sound amazing, plus they block out a lot of noise. The only complaint I have after a year of regular use is that a chunk of plastic recently fell or broke off from the underside of the head-band. It didn't affect the use of the 'phones at all, but it makes me wonder if anything else might fall off. All in all, very good headphones for about 100USD.

I'm using AKG K240 Studios. They're comfortable, sound ok (to me) and were relatively cheap. Forgot how much tho, lol...
It was between these and higher end Sonys for me, and these were a better deal.
Worth looking at. Note though that there are a few different AKG 240 models, I have the "K240 studio" model.

You need monitors too dude

Grado SR80. They're not pretty, they look like the old-school hearing test phones. But they sound great IMO. And they were less than $100.

Beyer DT-770 really great sounding... but headphones aren't the whole story in a mix

beyerdynamic DT770 Pro, I did not do an exhaustive comparison, but these were the best of what I listened to. Is there a "headphone boutique" where you can compare all of these?

I was planning on buying a nice pair of monitors, but I cant really use them all the time cause my apartment walls are paper thin and neighbors are bitches. I have used almost every sony headphone, and I recently switched to the technics for DJing. ANd I love them, but you really dont want to be wearing them for hours and hours every day. They can get a little tight.

After reading all of the reviews, I see alot of people talking about $100 headphones, but what about the $500+ crowd. Thats what I want to hear about. the AKG, Audiotechnica, etc. Are they worth it. I guess if I have monitors to do my mixing on when I need them, is it even worth it to buy expensive phones.

I have the AKG K240S's as well, I dig them quite a bit. Definitely not a $500+ pair, but if I could afford $500+, I'd just get some nice monitor's instead. =P

no.

sure, great headphpones are going to sound great, be comfortable, have all kinds of really impressive/inaudible-to-normal-human specs, but you still don't want to mix in headphones if you can help it.

Sony MDR-V900 Headphones. Kind of pricey but sound incredible!

Sennheiser HD280's.

They sound better than every other headphone in their price range, including ALL the Sonys. They also don't fall off your head when you're headbanging behind a mountain of gear.
