I've got one of these:
Great protection, loads of room, easy to carry. Best part is, in the USA they consider a backpack as a "personal item" for airlines.... so you can still bring a suitcase on with you.

That's one reason I like the backpack option: I feel like it's less obvious to potential thieves that I have a laptop with me and it's a lot harder to grab something off my back than from out of my hand.

I use one similar, except its made by burton. Nice thing is, is that it fits my laptop and my snowboard at the same time.
One of these years, im going to hike up to chute, write some beats, then drop in!

I also have a vanguard for my 17". They are tough as nails. But look a little suspicious.

Hey all, I use this for general purpose, school, work, or any non-music related activity that requires me taking my laptop out.
Recomended to me by a forum member and it is definitely a fantastic bag, stong, sturdy, well built, water proof, comfortable with plenty of room.
Timbuktu Messenger Bag.
And for gigs, (the rare occasion that I get them

) I use the studio bag by Maudio:
Again, an excellent bag, rugged and well built with plenty of room for accessories. It fits pretty much anything I need to take for a gig, it is just a little big and unwieldly for everyday use so that is why I opted for the timbuktu as a general purpose bag.
Maudio Bag at musicians friend.
I could not be happier with both. and now, between the two of them, I can carry even more stuff!
Mine can hold two

I got this airbag mara blu for £45. Holds the 15" Powerbook, Tascam US122, cables, two small mics, cd's and notebooks etc, and power supply. I'm hoping now that I've got a UC33e that I can arrange everything so I can fit that in too, but I think it'll be a bridge too far. It's got a big rubbery air filled cell inside it which the laptop slips into. So far so good.

One thing to watch out for -- thieves KNOW the big "brand names" and what gets carried in them (laptops, cameras, video gear, et cetera). If you haul expensive stuff around, it can be a good idea to do so in a carrier that doesn't cry out "steal me! I contain valuables you can fence!"
I'm probably going to buy a bag found at a local salvage store. It's got a biiig ol' U.S. Army Military Police Academy patch on the front. :-D
... I look decidedly NON-military. =^_^=
