Ableton Forum

Hello everybody,
I have searched the Ableton handbook and this forum for an answer to this, which doesn't seem like it should be difficult, but I'm still not able to accomplish it: I'm playing in a band (live performance) where I am playing both the keyboard part and the bass part. I have everything set up in Live and am sending sound out from my laptop's headphone jack. I'm using two MIDI keyboards each making use of a plugin to generate their sounds. I have a headphone (1/8") cable which splits into Left and Right, and I want to assign the bass and keyboard separately to those two sides so that I can plug into two separate amplifiers so that the keyboard and bass sounds are separated. I have tried panning each of the two instruments hard left and right in their respective channel strips, but when the signal shows up in the Master channel, it still looks like sound shows up on both sides, and of course the output isn't separated.

What am I missing?

PS I have a MacBook Pro, running Live 10...

Have you set your output as STEREO and not as 2 mono outputs?

Also, are you using any send effects because these will be in stereo unless you hard pan as well

If a channel is panned, it should appear on the output as panned. Maybe a screen shot might help.

I checked my Output configuration and both the 2 Mono Outputs and Stereo outputs are selected in yellow. If I unselect either one they both become greyed out. There are no other configuration options (I don't have an external audio interface, just using the built-in output on my laptop).

I am not using any send effects, but I do have some reverb on the Master channel...

A bit more detail on my setup: I am using dummy clips to trigger Chain Selector positions within a rack containing the different sounds and keyboard layouts that are needed for each song we are playing in our set. One channel is for the "keyboard" sounds, one is for the "bass" sounds. The main rack for each channel then also contains racks within each chain position corresponding to the different songs, so I realize maybe among all that somewhere the panning is lost. Still though, I would think that in the end, regardless of whatever is set at the instrument level, the sound would still have to go through whatever the panning for the channel is...

You can post images in services like Imgur and link them here.

But it is easier for you to check the signal flow yourself (by playing only one of the hard-panned instruments), Live has a bazillion meters over the whole signal flow, including between all FX, and all those meters are stereo and will show if the signal was panned 100% left/right or not (though Live labels it "50L" or "50R", to hint the user about how Live's panning doesn't mix signal between L/R channels).
