Strumming is to brush the fingers over the strings of (a musical instrument) in playing. It gives chords a natural feel. Sadly, Ableton doesn’t have a simple way of doing this . For the next update, I think many would appreciate the strum effect without needing to use an Arpeggiator or such.

Use the stretch markers in the detail editor. Easy. Both your suggestions indicate that perhaps you should spend a bit more time with the very well written users guide.

good tip, but still not easy if you want to trim the end. this is the point where a knife tool or note split command can be useful.

I'm pretty much anti-tool. I don't like modal. One of the joys of Live for me. I'll go with the split command though I hardly if ever need it. When I really need to, I split on the track where there is the command. However, I believe I did up-vote having CTRL+E work in the editor as well. It would be consistent with the whole Live approach and I can't think of an argument against it.

Live already has draw tool, doesn't it? I don't think it will be against the current behaviour. I agree to the point to keep away from having bunch of tools. Using a modifier + right click might be a good option.

Last post. Yeah, I don't really like the draw tool and don't use it. But I suppose if it's already there, putting a host of them under the same button wouldn't really affect me. As long as they're not forever in the way as with Bitwig, Studio One, etc. and the keyboard shortcuts are retained.

I'm just a tad worried that adding them will change the approach. Given Ableton's track record, probably not worth worrying about. The better I get at Live the more I think it's clever as heck.

Your comment indicates that perhaps you haven't used FL Studio's Strumizer before. It can be an eye opener. I suggest you do. It certainly makes it obvious that it is a feature that Ableton Live lacks and would definitely benefit Live's users if it had it. None of the workarounds that currently exist are quite as easy, specially because the workarounds are based on midi tools instead of changing the actual notes on the piano roll.

Also, I don't see how the stretch markers can in any way help accomplish the strumming effect, and I've read the users guide and used stretch markers for years. But if you have a trick under your sleeve please share.

I agree 200% with you. FL Studio has had Strumizer for a long time now, and Ableton Live should have an equivalent tool by now, and not midi workarounds.

I have been thinking about this some and see that some users are anti toolbars and others are pro toolbars. I kind of think the solution should be up to the user. How about updating Max4Live to where you can create your own tools to put on a customized toolbar? That way many esoteric tools can be created by users (freeing up Ableton to focus on other things) and these tools could be added based off of whether the user feels they need those tools or not.
