I've painted a few pieces of gear before as well, I know the risk you feel when committing like that!

I used Goo Gone and a cloth (paper towels were just falling apart). The sides of my push are now shinny and smooth. It took a lot of time and elbow grease. I still need to do the bottom of the push as I only had a small amount of Goo Gone to begin with.
