Newb question but kind of banging my head here. Is there a way to see the piano roll (midi) and device view (its effects, voice etc) at the same time. Finding that I need that occasionally so that i can watch my notes go by while tweaking the effects...

As it stands now im just shift+tabbing back and forth but not as effective as id like it to be.

No there is not.

Clip View Selector in the bottom right shows the notes of the selected Clip (and a play marker), should enough in some cases.

You can also open a second window, Ctrl(CMD)+Shift+W
