I'm very new to all this so bear with me.

I want to use a synth, in this case analog lab, several times for different elements - pads, keys, fx, percussion etc etc.

Am I right in thinking that I need to open a different version of the synth on a different track for every element? Or is there a more clever way of doing it?

Happy to read the manual if someone can point me to the right chapter!

I'm still learning, but I think there are not other ways to do that.
You could use instrument racks to put everything in one track, but you should load the same many istances of Analog Lab as the sounds you want.

I suppose where it seems really inefficient, is if I want use a percussive sound eg a snare from the Arturia soundpacks

At the moment, I'm having to load an entire synth track just to programme a snare sound.

Can anyone tell me if there are better solutions for this to learn?

You're doing it right.

You can put the VST on one track, and route the other tracks to the track. However, I'm not sure if there's a way to channelize the output of a track to make use of a multi-timbral instrument. Not that I know of or can see. It would be nice to hear from someone with a definitive answer.
