Cubase offers a very nice feature for the Piano Roll known as "Step Recording" and can be seen in this YouTube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9RF8X1n1mdw. As you play a note on the keyboard it adds it in accordance with the current quantize settings.

I have seen the Ableton suggestion here: https://www.ableton.com/en/blog/step-re ... vius-beck/, but this is less than ideal as you have to take your hands away from the MIDI controller to tap the "right-arrow key" to progress the recording.

This should be a toggle added to the Piano Roll feature-set to enable or disable step recording.

you can do this in ableton by pressing the note and then the right arrow key

create a new midi clip, and turn on "MIDI Editor Preview" button.

Then you can hold a note down on your midi keyboard and use left and right on your computer keyboard to change the length.

Adjust your grid to change how much it expands or shrinks

Yes. I referenced this in my original post and indicated that I don't like this behavior and would like the option to progress automatically instead of having to use the right-arrow key; hence the "like cubase".

I didn't like the method at first, but then I realized that any time I lose entering is made up for by the time I save having to change durations. On the off chance you didn't know, multiple presses of the arrow keys extend the duration. Set the grid to the smallest value you'll use, then you can change note durations very easily.

Like a lot of things in Live, it's fast once you wrap your head around it, and practice a little bit. It's also curiously satisfying as you acquire the skill.

Every time I see comparisons to other programs, I get the feeling that the commenter hasn't given the Live method much of a chance. I know from experience that Live is much easier once you stop fighting it. Watching a couple of people who were very facile with these things made me realize that I was just not seeing the possibilities. Live is certainly not without flaws, but it's very clever in many ways.

Yeah I think a few Live concepts throws off some users but yeah some areas in Live are also extremely efficient. I'm not a huge fan of the Step Editor though (although I can tell it is more geared for folks using it to input chords/melodies and what not and less for Drums where an auto advance would have been nice).

But overall Live is one of my favorite piano rolls (while also being one of the most simplest piano rolls), as its key commands seems well thought out and for doing most stuff it is pretty fast (not saying it is without flaws though).
