Looking for a Midi Looper which can be automated

Hi everybody,
I'm doing live looping with automated looper plugins on different tracks (see eg. here https://www.instagram.com/p/CAIn-IrIad2 ... _copy_link)
sometimes it would be great to have a midi looper, doing exactly the same things as the ableton audio looper but for midi. I've been searching for so this for hours now but cannot find a solution (= a midi looper on which I can automate play/rec/stop in arrangement view).
Any ideas? Or am I maybe just not seeing the easy solution?!?
Thanks in advance!
Jonas

I made something a few years ago for a client that would probably do exactly what you need, but it's part of a more complicated device, so I'll need to extract the methods I used and create a new standalone m4l device out of it. I've been meaning to do it for a while, as I have a need for it myself. Message me directly if you still need it and I'll see if I can move it to the front of my backlog :)

I can't help, I just also strongly wish for the same thing

I want to do hands free live looping in arrangement view using automation. I would love the ability to record a midi loop and automate the subsequent quantization of that loop.

I searched for step sequencers that I might be able to use live, but I haven't found anything that works live, and most only have 16 steps.

It's a bit frustrating

Is there any particular reason why using clips wouldn't work ?

I have quite the same question. ..
An advantage of the looper compared to clips is that looper will find the first bpm of the first loop, set it to live tempo and always divide the loop in equal bars even without quantization..

There is some decices that do that with midi clips but they are very old and buggy with recent Live versions.

If you have any idea ?

Cheers

There are some Midi-Looper in MaxforLive.

Yes but mainly all are not working well with live 11...
I really tried them all sonce a long time.
I never found a midi clip looper that work as well as the audio looper for midi.

The goal is to have a midi clip looper that set the global tempo when the first midi clip is record and which divide the clip in a regular number of bars..

The bests seem " midi clip looper v 0.1" or "libreloop" or "loopo" . These 3 devices are on maxforlive.com but none of them are working good on Live 11...

Any idea ?

seems doable with the new mtr object. Record unsynced in ms, then set the Live Tempo, start the Transport. Restart Loop ever X-Bars whith synced metro. But there is no quantisation since the notes recorded and saved in ms and not in ticks.

Thank you
Yes the updated mtr object is a great tool !
But i would like to use clips but with this possibility that the first recorded midi clip sets the global tempo and be divided in equal number of bars (without predefined number) it was exactly what "midi clip looper 0.1" did (it was even reviewed in SonicBloom some years ago) but it is not updated since a long time and is almost unusable on Live 11...

Hey

I searched for similar things and I found a way that works for me. You can automate all the parameters of MIDI clips in session view, including quantization, if you use the IAC driver on MAC or a similar device on Windows. I made a video of a song that is mostly comprised of MIDI loops, automated in a way that equates to a hands-free live looping experience.

the catch is, it only works if you arrange the song ahead of time, so there's potentially not as much room for improvisation as with some other methods.

Basically:
Set the IAC driver to a channel that won't interfere with your controller (like MIDI channel 3). Then create a MIDI track with a MIDI clip to trigger said IAC MIDI channel. This clip spans the entire length of your song. Map the parameters of the clips/plugins/whatever to notes, and place them accordingly. This is a painstaking process that requires a lot of forethought and organization. Also, I created empty MIDI clips ahead of time for each of my MIDI loops. Once my arrangement was done, I had to replace/delete the MIDI data in the clips in order to start again.

As you can see, you may gain the widespread MIDI looping automation power of which you seek, but you will concede the ability to improvise on-the-fly loops that Ableton is supposed to be like, all about. It's a bit of a devil's bargain.
