Can you route midi effect plugins to an audio track?

Hi,
I understand that midi effects apply to midi instruments and vise versa with audio tracks. Still I have stubbornly tried to find a way to be able to have midi track plugins and effects affect audio tracks. Here are a few of the things I have tried:
1. I have used a drum rack and a simpler to drop parts of my audio track in (as samples) and recorded as midi. Then I attempted to drop some midi plugins on the track assuming that since it is recording as midi, well maybe it will work... But no.
2. I have tried to freeze and flatten the midi track to make it audio and tried routing with another midi track to have the audio track affected by the effects on the midi track. Didnt work.
Any help? Is this even possible? Any tricks?
