I want to be able to improvise live without having to touch the mouse, so im after a sequencer that enables me to choose a track, hit record and automatically begin recording new material in an empty slot while previously recorded material on that track stops. If the newly recorded material is bad, i want to be able to just hit delete, arm the slot again and then record new stuff in that very same slot.

I havent found a way to record into the next empty slot in Live 4, instead i have to assign a controller for each empty slot and since I use quite a few slots in my songs, the controllers are too few even if I use the keyboard aswell. What im wondering is, is there a feature in Live 4 that i have missed? If not, is this what im looking for implemented in Live 5?

There isn't a record next clip button, so use the scene up/down buttons (midi-mapped if you want) in conjunction with the track launch button that appears when you activate midi or key assign.

in a sense, yeah, you can set the scene launch to automatically start recording in armed scenes. But remember that theres a difference between arming a track and recording onto it.

It makes a lot of sense to be able to record into different tracks without having to select it.

But then how would you select the track? By mouse? Or by midi? Neither of these time-wasting stops are neccesary to record onto an armed track using scene up/down plus track launch.

i'll play around with that clip/loop launcher stuff tonight. i'm at work now. i actually was doing clip/loop creation stuff in an audio track and it was working. i just didn't have a guitar hooked up at my breakfast table this morning!

here's what i did:
open live5
drag in a beat sample from my idiotically-large sample library
open reason3
create a mixer and subtractor in reason
map the device to a midi channel in MIDI1 in Live5
route AUDIO1's input to "Reason" and arm it for recording
hit the triangle "play" button on AUDIO1's first clip slot
play stuff
watch it record wav data into the clip
hit the triangle "play" button again when i'm done
loop starts to play in time
click next "play" triangle in the next clip slot
play stuff
click the play triangle again. listen to it loop the new sample



some stuff to check
in Live preferences, under Defaults
Make sure "Launch Mode" is set to "Trigger"
Make sure "Loop/Warp Short Samples" is set to Auto
Make sure "Auto-warp long Samples is set to "on"

I don't know if these affect it but i figured i'd include them for completeness' sake.
