I'm going to upgrade to Live 5 in few days surely before the 31st July , I'm considering to take advantage of the Operator special offer .
My question is : is it worth it 89 euros?
I would like to have your opinion , I'm not sure myself .
thank you in advance

But is it indispensable?

Nothing is indispensable, but Operator is damn good. It just beckons you to tweak it. It is tightly integrated into Live, which for some may not be a good thing, but if you accept the fact that it is Live-specific, then it is more than OK. The Covert Operator patches are also a wonderful set of sonic surgery examples. At that price I think the right thing to do is get it.

i'd recommend you get it.
There are more complex vst FM synths out there, but the tight integration of Operator to Live is a big plus. As is its availability in Rewire mode. Also, the simplicity of programming it has taken me much further than ever before in bothering to seriously tweak - this has led me to believe you can get uniquely special sounds from Operator, which may or may not be true.

Good way of phrazing that.
I've had countless discussions wetter the operator was unique or not.
The only reply you'll get that comes close to decent is: Blablabla fm7.....
FM patch programming has always been considered a dark art.
But with the operator. You'll get the hang of it pretty quick.
It's still an artform though.
I'm looking forward to the new lessons. Although i've made dozens of patches that utilize the new waveshaping feature. I still feel like there is more to it.
And my brain is hungry for more.

I only spent last night after a long tiring weekend, but like the quality of the sounds so far (and I am normally an analogue/hardware guy for sounds...)

Thank you for so many point of view.
My doubts are regarding the use of operator that is not a regular plug-in so I can use in oher program such as my favourite bidule .
I have additive synthesys , substractive synthesys , granular but not a real FM synth. By other way if I get Operator I cannot use outside LIve
That's the dilemma If Operator was a VST/AU plug-in there was no doubt …

ive just cracked and ordered l5 now - ill give operator a whirl in the demo but from what ive seen/heard im pretty sure ill buy it. ive been using the l4 demo for a few months now and for the extra features in 5 i think its well worth a purchase. cant wait to get all the presets and what nots - had reason 2.5 but sold it as it just isnt flexible enough.

Try before you buy. I was tempted by the attractive offer so turned it on on my ver 4, to check it out again.........same as before- this synth does not grab me by the ear or anything else. I like Ableton, but I am not such fan to buy it just because it is cheap.

I was hesitant to pick it up...but I always told myself that I would buy
Operator if it was under 100USD....it was so I did...
The ease of use and perfect integration with Live has me extremely pleased.
After a weekend of serious use with it, I realized that I should have picked
it up in the beginning.

You might check out the Covert Operator patches - just do a search in the forum for "Covert Operator" and you can access over 500 patches that you can try out in the Live5 demo. It should give you a very good idea.
For me, I wasn't impressed with Operator at first, probably because it looked so simplistic and because I was pissed off that I had to pay (a lot) for a new synth in Live, and the CPU usage was really high. When the offer L5 came out, I seriously reconsidered, tested it out, read a lot of online reviews, and then decided to go for it.
The biggest advantage is the tight integration with Live and the ease of programmability. Once you do the lessons, you'll see that Operator begs you to f*ck with it...it's more inviting than a spread eagle porn star. The looping envelopes make lovely choppy loops, and the automatability of everything is just lovely. The patches I've created have all been very reasonable on my CPU in L5, and they have sounded very nice...from bells to basses to pads, to snares. FM synthesis, quite frankly frightens me and gives me shrinkage. With Operator, my attitude now is, if Henke can do it, why the hell can't I?!
Hope you decide to get it, as it is definitely worth $89 Euros.

Once you do the lessons
Yes. also, the operator movie:
http://www.ableton.com/index.php?main=movies
it's a very good presentation that goes over the entire model, and features a crisp explanation of the unique auditory benefits involving 'selective aliasing' and velocity control. The hat, however, remains a mystery.
