Live 11 Follow Feature Question

Post by docbot » Thu Dec 03, 2020 12:05 am

The new follow feature looks great! Not just to make Live follow a live drummer, but I guess you can also use it to listen to a audio clock generated by a modular. Since it's made to listen to a outside Audio Signal and follow a "live" source I wonder if it's latency compensated though?

Meaning Ableton listens to the clock signal and then after a few (milli)second delays the clock by the input and output latency to make the Output Signal of the interface match up with the live drummer / clock. Renoise does this with external Midi Clocks for example.

It's latency compensated AFAIK. It'd be a total mess otherwise.

What about MIDI clock? When syncing Live to an external MIDI clock, is that latency compensated?

don't think so or at least it hasn't been in Live 10. There's also no automatic latency compensation for Midi Out to HW Synths that are not going back into your interface, you can buy a expert sleepers usamo for that (it will send midi over audio, which has latency)

Yep. I knew about clock out not being compensated. Yesterday I tested clock in. No deal there either. :(

Yes, it's a bit wierd that it can now do perfect slaving to analog clock with shifting latency, but not shift midi / midiclock in/out

At least I hope that's whats happening, I'm buying a ER-M Midiclock (DIN/Modular Out goes into Audio IN of the Follow Feature) which should then give me perfect sync between Live's Audio Out and my Hardware sequencer.
