Proper way to set up a Hardware keyboard to use as main Ableton keyboard?

What’s the proper way to use my external hardware keyboard as a synth and also as my main trigger keyboard in Ableton? What’s the proper input / output configuration in the settings?
I’m getting some doubling of audio in playback, but not in my recordings and also having some trouble with getting the pedal to work. If anyone could explain or point to some helpful resources I’d greatly appreciate it : )
