Looping with Direct Monitoring - Help Please

I'm trying out Ableton Live but have immediately run into an issue. Have searched and read several threads, but can't figure it out. Any advice greatly appreciated!
My main interest is live looping with a guitar. To test this, I have set up an audio track and added the Looper effect. This allows me to create a loop if monitoring is set to "In" or "Auto". However, if monitoring is set to "Off", the loop is created but no sound is recorded. I tried setting the Looper's output to "Never", but that made no difference.
The reason I need monitoring "Off" is that I use a LIne6 Helix for guitar, which provides direct monitoring. The Ableton help says that this is what "Off" is for, i.e. direct monitoring.
I have also tried looping with clips, but had the same problem. That is, I created one audio track with the input set to the Helix and the output set to "Master", a second track with the input set to the first track and the output set to "Master" and monitoring off. Again, if the first track has monitoring set to "In" or "Auto", this works, but not with monitoring set to "Off".
