Windows infection help (slightly OT)

Hi,
When I first got my music laptop I promised myself I would't ever put it on the internet, but due to some unfourtuate/stupid circumstances I recently had to- and am now paying the price.
My computer is now infected with the W32.Jeffo virus which basicly loads up
svchost.exe which then continously copies itself there-by taking up more ram and overloading the cpu cycles - or from what I've read and (kinda) understood is what it does. I've also got a couple of adware things that can't be gotten rid of using Ad-adware - two little symbols on my taskbar which tells me my computer has adware on it but when clicked on lead me straight to a web page.
Please any help would be so kind of you, because of this I cannot use any of my music software and I havent been able to upgrade to Live 5 because of my lack of understanding of the situasion - I'm really retarded when it comes to computers.
So in conclusion - my questions-
1) How do I get rid of this virus? - I know that it has something to do with going into F8 on start up and blocking svchost.exe from starting up.
2)I think these adware things are living in my temp file - can I just delete this file without causing any problems?
3) If I reformat my hard drive will i get rid of all my problems? and does reformatting lose the OS (windows xp) aswell?
Thank you for your time,
Michael

Hi,
for the virus, see there, you'll get the solution:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/av ... jeefo.html

For adware, try webroot spysweeper. I've used it (and pay for it) for one year and didn't have any adware since then.

thank you

thanks for your help.
I've looked at the page and followed all the steps to get rid of svchost.exe yet when I get to where it should be it's not there. Could it be hiding under another name?
thanks again
Michael

You could download Avast anti-virus from www.avast.com. Also try Microsoft's anti spyware removal.

first update your virus definition progs, then restart your computer and hold f8 and start in safe mode. make a virus scan with minimal programs running.
if this wont help then go to folder options and make hidden files be shown then search for 'suspicious' files on your hard discs and windows folder[s] and delete em manually [ i got rid of some viruses that way ], but for doing this you should know what is what in your system. if this still wont help then you can get external hd somewhere and install second operation system there, then start with it and delete your previus windows files manually, but watch out for hidden files, and documents and settings folder, dont accidently delete your files.
after disconnect external hd install windows again, you should get clean intall with no files lost. it works well when you dont wanna do a format.
thats pretty much it. good luck
