Playing slices with keyboard problem

Hi,
I've just hooked up an old M Audio keyboard to Ableton Live 10 Suite to play around with Simpler (after Ableton's amazing webinar last night!). It's working fine with classic but if I select 'Slice' the keyboard will only play slice one at different pitches, rather than different slices. It all works great with the computer keyboard, so I'm assuming it's some kind of midi issue (I'm a midi beginner really).
Is there a fix for this that anyone knows about? Thanks in advance for any help.
