MacPro5,1 + MOTU 828Mk3 @ 96KHz - bad stuttering

Why is it that in Logic Pro 10.6.2 I can playback 16 channels of audio and software instruments + 8 busses loaded with effects at 96KHz/24bit with a buffer size of 256 without an issue, yet in Live 11 I can't manage 4 tracks with a few basic effects on two aux busses straight into master @ the same KHz + buffer size without it stuttering + popping + breaking up like crazy?
I understand that my rig is ye olde (12 core [24 thread] Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X5690 @ 3.47GHz , 32GB 1333MHz memory, Radeon RX 580, MOTU 828 Mk3 FireWire), but surely it should be good enough to manage this level of processing?
Is it simply down to not having modern CPU architecture or is it likely I'm doing something wrong?
