Midi Controller Problem

OK, newbie here. Ableton Live11 Standard, Windows.
I'm using an Akai MPD218 in Ableton. I have a Drumkit set up on a midi track, and the pads work just fine on that track. But When I try to record, there's no sound and no midi notes are recorded in piano roll. A red and white circle also appears over the track when I mouse over it when in record. However, the pads do work and I get sound when in playback. Just when I'm in record, I get no sound. However, I do get an indicator that the channel is receiving midi information.
I would attach some screenshots here, but I don't know how to do that.
